A suspended sentence usually means you have been found guilty, but do not immediately have to serve your sentence. A triggering event, such as a second arrest or a violation of probation, will require you to serve your sentence. The conviction still appears on your record.

When an individual receivs a suspended sentence, the judge sentences them to a period of incarceration but requires them to serve only part (or even none) of the time. Unless the judge orders expungement upon completion of the sentence, your record will reflect conviction.

A suspended sentence usually means that if you do not commit another criminal offense within a designated time period, you will not haveto serve any period of incarceration at all. If you do commit another offense, however, you will have to serve thesentence. If you fail to commit another offense, in most instances, your record will be wiped clean.

When a sentence is suspended, it is set aside. This is common with first-time offenders and less serious crimes. So while the crime may require a certain sentence, the individual doesn't serve the sentence, which is likely incarceration. Instead, community service, education, drug testing and/or a fine is imposed. The conviction remains on the record.

A suspended sentence means that you do not have to serve the time, although you can wind up actually having to do it if you violate probation. You still have a conviction and a record.
