What does a doctor mean when he says someone who is pregnant has purple edema on their skin?

My doctor mentioned this while I was in the office today and I am concerned that it is something bad.

Edema is the medical term for swelling. Sometimes when a body part becomes swollen the color of the skin appears purple in color, hence the doctor claiming that the patient has purple edema.

Edema is when parts of your body swell. It is quite common in pregnancy to experience swelling of the legs, feet and hands. Sometimes the skin takes on a purple hue and hence the name purple edema. You should report any swelling to your doctor and take his/her advice in regard to what, if anything, needs to be done.

Edemas are swelling caused by the accumulation of excess fluid. Treatment usually involves diuretics to flush out the fluid. Your doctor will let you know if you need them.

During pregnancy, it is not unusual for a woman to have swelling in her legs, feet and hands. Occasionally the skin will have a purple hue that gives the condition the name purple edema. The swelling is usual, but shoudl be monitored by a doctor. He may advise that nothing needs to be done.

Edema is common during pregnancy. It's nothing to be concerned about but if swelling increases or becomes painful, seek medical attention as this can be a sign of possible complications.

Edema means swelling; as you can imagine, this is common and normal in any pregnancy. A purple edema is a swelling with something similar to a bruise. This can be caused by something other than trauma, and, again, is not uncommon for pregnant women. If you are concerned, you can ask your doctor, but this is almost certainly nothing serious.
