The purity of gold is measured in carat (or karat). Maximum purity (99,9% gold) is 24 carat. A typical gold necklace made of 18 K gold, has only 75 % (18/24) pure gold, while a ring made of 12 karat gold contains 50 % (12/24) other metals.

It measures how much gold is in it and the rest of it would be impurities to make it last longer and not as mailable. I could be wrong though. Check with a person that works at a place that sells gold. You could just believe me though, that works too.
