This is usually the result of aging and normal wear, though it may result from a cyst or small defect. First employ RICE- Rest, Ice, Compression,Elevation and treat with NSAIDS- non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, the most common non-prescription agents being Naproxen or Ibuprofen. Arthroscopic surgery may be used, particularly in the instance of a cyst or defect.

There is not too much that can be done medically. Since the degeneration will make your knee weaker, however, you should try to avoid high impact activities and twisting motions.

Treatment of meniscal tears includes simple observation, meniscectomy, and meniscal repair. Tears that are stable, < 1 cm in length, and that do not cause significant mechanical symptoms may be treated with simple observation. Those tears that are unstable and contribute to mechanical symptoms are treated with operative intervention.
