Depends on the amount of the damage to the disc but it can get worst if not treated properly. It can be mild if caught early but it can require surgery to fix if there is plenty of damage that is influencing the life of the patient. A MRI can be used to tell the amount of damage.

Degenerative disc disease is pretty normal for people over the age of 50. The severity depends on how much it affects your daily living. If you have only occasional twinges or back pain its mild. If it is constant in interveres with your live then it is severe. It is a subjective qualification.

This isn't a disease but occurs as a normal part of aging. Severity varies from mild to severe and cannot be determined solely by stating location of the condition.

Lumbar level 1 disc degenerative disease is fairly common and usually only presents it self with a minor pain level. It is estimated that at least thirty percent of people between the ages of 30 and 50 will have some form of degeneration in their spinal discs. For people over 60, it is considered to be a normal condition.
