Coming from the Greek, an Anthroponymologist studies personal names including surnames, toponymists study place names, and onomatologists study the broader category of names of any kind.

I think they are called hereditists. They study the history behind the name and what the occupations were of different people. Thus, they study how the family came about and went about.
