It actually depends on what kind of name study you are looking for. These are all part of linguistics and involve the origins and history of names. Coming from the Greek, an Anthroponymologist studies personal names including surnames, toponymists study place names, and onomatologists study the broader category of names of any kind.

A person who studies the origins of names is called an onomastician. The field of study is onomastics or onomatology .

I think they are called hereditists. They study the history behind the name and what the occupations were of different people. Thus, they study how the family came about and went about.
