On newer cars with the ODBII setup some codes are shared. However manufacturers do sometimes add vehicle specific codes. You can look up lists of codes online if you want that included descriptions of each.
They identify specific problems with your vehicle, especially emissions. There are different series such as OBD1, OBD2 and OBD3 etc. Most cars use the same series based on its year.
