What do the red blood cells do?

The molecule hemoglobin in the red blood cells picks up and binds oxygen in the lungs. The cell is than pumped through the body and delivers the oxygen to tissues where it is needed. On the way back to the lungs, carbon dioxide is picked up by hemoglobin in the tissues and brought back to the lung to be exhaled.

Red blood cells are responsible for carrying oxygen throughout your body. They also take carbon dioxide from your organs back to your heart, where it is expelled through the lungs.
