They basically look for black smut that has black cracks around the chimney. This is the most common way to check. They also check for lose bricks or lose items inside the chimney and also they check for proper ventilation in order to allow the heat and smoke to pass through.

The inspectors usually look for the inside the chimney and check for the direction of the soot to tell if there is a problem with the chimney corbellation. They also check for any missing bricks or loose brick that can destroy the foundation of the chimney and destroy the foundation.

Inspectors want to know that your chimney has no people or animals lodged in there. That is very important so you don't cook anything.
