There are a few things to look for, one is that if your dog has a dry, warm nose, then he is dehydrated. If your dog is vomiting or has diarrhea for more than a day, because this could just be a small allergic reaction, or the diarrhea has blood, mucous or is black and tarry that could be serious.

An observant dog owner will notice changes in their pet's behavior that indicate they are not feeling well. Some specific signs to watch for include lassitude or lethargy, excessive water consumption, and/or refusing normal food.

Generally, if a dog is sick they will be lethargic and not interested in the things he normally is, like food or a favorite toy. Dogs that are sick want to rest and be kept comfortable. A dog may refuse food for a few days, but water is important. Make sure a sick dog drinks.

There will be changes in your dog's normal habits. Take notice of changes in: appetite, water intake, activity level, bowel and urine movements, losing housebreaking, increased licking. Illness can cause vomiting, coughing, diarrhea, decreased appetite, lethargy, urinating in the home once housebroken, licking their limbs, pale gums.
