You need to make sure that you have all the correct cables, with those cables inserted into the correct output/input spots. Once you have checked these things you also need to make sure the speakers are spread around the room to get the best effects from the system.

It's good to know how many watts your receiver can handle. If you hook up equipment that uses a greater amount than the receiver is rated for you'll overload it.

one of the first things that you want to know is if your media supports the surround sound. meaning on your television, dvd player etc it should let you know if it does or does not support Dolby Surround sound or THX for that matter. Next you want to check on a receiver so it handles sound better.

You need to make sure that the receiver (whatever you are hooking the speakers to) has the capability of transmitting surround sound.
