The main thing you will want to consider is the size of the stick. If it is too long, it will hinder your skating ability as well as your movement on the ice.

The length of the stick (although you can cut it down if the stick is long for you), and the make.

Don't pick a stick that is too long or too short for you. You don't want to slouch, and you don't want too much reach. Make it chin level.

You need to consider a couple of factors. The length of the stick needs to be right for your height. Also, the rigidity of the stick is important.

Make sure they are big enough and durable enough in case you need to use them in a fight. Once you find some, serrate the edges for additional enemy damages.

The length of the stick is the most important aspect, but also the curve of the stick, and whether you want wooden or fibreglass.

Whether or not you are a right or left handed shot, your height and weight (you can cut the stick down to your level, but if it's too short, there is nothing you can do).

You need to look and flex, weight and blade curve. Go to a real hockey store (not a general sports store) and tell them you are a beginner and they can help you with flex and weight. It is best to start with a wooden stick.
