Swollen ears are typically something called hematomas. The dog shakes his head because he has an ear infection and the ear flap becomes filed with blood. This can be very painful and uncomfortable. The dog needs to be taken to the vet. The vet will likely prescribe antibiotics as well as drain the ears.

Take your dog to the veterinarian for the most accurate diagnosis. Ear infection, which usually accompanied by an odor from the ear; ear mites, which may lead to brown waxy discharge in the ear; allergy with scratch marks or other inflamed area(s) on the body, and insect bites are just some common causes.

Your dog might have an allergic reaction to something. Alternatively, he could have ear mites. Go to a veterinarian to confirm these possibilities and rule out other diseases.

Is the ear swollen on the internal part or on the external part? Internal swelling could indicate an ear infection. External swelling could be a hematoma of the ear. Each case can be treated by a veterinarian. Sometimes, an ear hematoma might have to be fixed surgically.

Dogs sometimes get a condition called an aural hematoma, caused when there are ruptures - usually a result of intense scratching - in the small blood vessels in the flap. The scratching that causes the hematoma can be the result of ear mites or an infection, so consult your vet.

The first thing you need to do is make sure the dog hasn't been stung or bitten by something. The other thing is look in the dogs ears and make sure there are no mites in the dogs ears they will also make the dogs ears swell and it can be significant.
