A low hematocrit count may not only indicate iron deficiency or anemia but also vitamin and mineral deficiencies. a high hematocrit count reflects dehydration which can be easily reversed. In addition, an increase in hematocrit also suggests that a person is suffering from Polycythemia (a condition having more than the normal red blood cells.

Hematocrit is the concentration of red blood cells in a blood sample (that is drawn at the lab or physician's office). Red blood cells contain iron. Normal results are 48% for men and 38% for women. Anything less could indicate anemia or massive blood loss.
