Heating pads may promote blood flow to the applied area, causing a pseudo-inflammatory effect and bringing more nutrients and oxygen to the area. They also help with pain because the heat dulls pain receptors in the area. However, the healing effect from heating pads are very modest compared to what your body already does.

In some illnesses and injuries, heat feels soothing and makes you feel better. The heat will increase your circulation and that speeds relief to the injured part. Heating pads tend to relax stiff muscles and helps hurting backs. A rule of thumb is that if cold doesn't help, heat usually will.
