What did I do wrong if I changed my timing belt and now it will not go on tight?

Did you route the belt correctly and did you put the tensioner in correctly. Is the tensioner a manual tensioner or self adjusting?

It sounds like something might have happened to the tensioner. IT may need to be checked or replaced before it will take out the slack.

There is only one way to install a timing belt typically. If it has slack either the tensioner got stuck when the old one was removed or you got the wrong belt. Double check to make sure you have the correct belt then make sure that you are routing it exactly the same way.

Most likely, you've used the wrong belt. Compare it to the old one. You might also want to check the tensioner, if equipped.

The timing belt must be taunt. Thus, this installation is unacceptable. Check the route the belt follows. It should be the same as before you began. Verify the part number.

They could have sold you the wrong belt. The best thing to do is to make sure that the belts are the same legnth.
