Mark two spots on the old belt and the cam gears where two of the belt teeth meet each of the cam gears and keep the gears from moving. Mark the new belt in the same spots and install making sure to line up the marks with the cam gears.

Well, if you want to time the belt, you have to make sure that the area before you is cleared out. In your 1990 BMW, make sure that there is a space to put the timing belt. If you have an existing when uninstall it and then put the other one in the way you took the last one out.

As far as removal is concerned that should be as simple as releasing tension on the belt by loosening the tensioner. Now installation is merely slipping the belt back over the pulleys, releasing the tensioner, and then sliding the belt back onto the tensioner. Make sure you check the belt to see that it is securely seated in all pulleys

You will need to remove the timing belt cover first. Then you can get at the timing belt. Replace it with a dealer belt and then replace the timing belt cover.

My best advice would be that if you need to ask for advice on the Internet, take it to a mechanic! Done incorrectly this can easily destroy your engine.

First and foremost make sure you purchase the exact model of timing belt you need for your BMW. There are many brands out there. Secondly, make sure when you begin you have all the tools you need and that the car is TURNED OFF.

you need to check the owners manual or a mechanics book for the timing marks on the gears. damage can result to the engine if the timing is not right.

Take several pictures of the belt routing and draw a labeled diagram before you take the belt off. Also, make sure that you have the correct tools.
