Are you watering your lawn late in the day, when it doesn't have time to either evaporate or be absorbed by the soil before the sun sets?

Your grass will not actually rust, because only metals can rust. However, there are several kinds of fungus that are rust colored. This is caused by excessive wetness.

It appears that you may have made a perfect environment for a rust or fungus. Scotts Starter is a high N product. You watered more than adequately, may be too much. The temperatures were ideal. All these things combined are a perfect fungus starter. he fertilizer may have burned the new roots, agravated by the temps.
