I did just that recently. First I scrapped any buildup, spatula, or razor blade will do. You have to be careful not to scrape the porcelain. With a sponge that has one side tough for scrubbing, I used comet. It took a few tries but it worked.

There are many many cleaners that will do the trick. But I highly recommend CLR brand. If there is a foaming scrub, I would say go with that. Spray the area of the tub with rust and use a sponge or steel wool Brillo pad. The foam will break down the rust and it will wipe right up.

The easiest way that I have found to remove rust stains from a bath tub is to use some CLR. It is a stain removed that it available at any local home store and also most supermarkets and retail stores.

I've had good luck with a product called 'Barkeeps Friend' or something like that. It comes in a can like Comet and is a powder. It's good because it works on both the drain and the porcelain parts without harming either one. If you use something like a stiff wire brush, it may scar the porcelain.
