What could cause my holly tree to be covered in black dust?

When a holly tree is covered in black dust it is usually from something is the atmosphere. Depending on where you live, it could be many things. For example, if you live by a steel mill the blakc dust could be coming from there. Or if you live by an airport it could be brake dust from the planes.

You holly tree is probably suffering from scale which allows you tree to be develop a sooty type mold. You should be able to simply wipe the mold off the leaves. If your infestation seems to be severe than you should treat your tree with a pesticide or horticultural oil.

probably it is the fly ash from thermal power that has a big contribution for this situation. May be some more pollution related cause there.

If your holly tree is covered with black dust, perhaps it may be as simple as ash from yours or a neighbors chimney. Also, it could be due to exhaust from automobiles if you live in a highly congested area.
