Loose steering in a Jeep is caused by 3 potential problems. The most common is the pitman arm. If that is in good shape, it could be the drag-link. Finally, the steering box could be the root cause, however, this is less likely than the first two potential problems. Check the bolts for the steering box to the frame.

there are a couple different things that could be causing it. a loose outer tie rod end could easily cause it, or it could be either your steering pump has play in it. there is a slight possibility that it could even be ball joints could be bad causing your problem.

The steering becomes more loose when the suspension and steering column become jolted - usually by a large bump or accident. It needs to be realigned so that the steering is tight again.
