This can be as simple as a hormonal chemical change or a dietary embalance that can cause the pigmentation of the skin to change. One thing you would be able to do is take a hormone test. This can be done through an urinalysis test. It would be best to seek your physician or dermatologist.

It is normal for skin to darken and become tougher in areas where it rubs together. For example between your thighs, under your armpits, and in between stomach folds.

If it is extremely recent it could be caused by any number of skin conditions or irritations, especially if the skin has not sloughed off or there have been minor burns. If it is not new, then it could be from sun exposure or lack of. Or even age.
