This could be a symptom of athlete's foot. It is a fungus and needs antifungal treatment. There are many sprays and creams available over the counter. Athlete's foot can also cause the skin in the area to be red, itchy, and may be peeling. Also wear clean socks and dry shoes.

There are a number of things that could cause burning on the side of your foot, but the main ones are probably either an injury such as a penched nerve or muscle or possibly athletes foot. I would use ice on the problem area and if it doesn't clear up then go to the doctor.

If the only symptom you have is a burning sensation, and you are not diabetic, you should have your blood sugar tested. High blood sugar can lead to that type of a sensation, because blood flow to the outer extremities is the first that is compromised, and it causes damage.

Burning of the foot, regardless of location is due to nerve sensations that can be attributed to many diseases. The most common one is Diabetes and should be checked out by a physician immediately. Another cause of this sort of pain could be standing too close to a fire and then your foot would get burned.
