What could cause a Volvo 850 keyless entry to stop working?

First thing is to replace the battery. If that doesn't solve the problem then call your local auto parts stores and ask if they have a tester for keyless entry remotes and check it there. If the remote doesn't work with a fresh battery it is time to replace it.

If the power door locks still work, then the batteries are dead in the remote. If the remote is dead, you will need to remove the case using a small knife or coin and replace the battery. It may need to be reprogrammed on some models once you swap the battery

I hate to respond with a stupid sounding question, but have you changed the battery in the remote? If you have, and I hope you already have, the it's most likely a blown fuse or relay. Check your owners manual for any fuse or relay related to the keyless entry and check them. Replace them if necessary.

You may need to replace the battery in the key. This can be done at most authorized garages and is not uncommon in older cars. I don't think you could do this yourself.

Start by checking/changing the obvious and perhaps even consult your dealership or local automotive shop/expert. Most likely the culprit is either bad wiring or your battery is running low. Check both.

Your remote may have run out of batterys or the remote just died. See if the dealer can get you a new one.
