A bump can either be cancerous or non-cancerous. Unfortunately, the sudden appearance usually means that it might spread throughout the skin. Therefore, the veterinarian would need to treat it immediately.

First check for ticks or, if inflamed, have the vet check on it. Benign fatty lumps are not unusual on some breeds, especially as they get older. It is a good idea to have your vet start a lump map, so new ones can be identified. If irregular or miscolored cancer is also possible.

Bumps on dogs are called hot spots and are caused by allergens or allergic reactions. One of the most common allergic reaction is from flea bites. Dog will knaw, chew, lick and rub the itchy spot until the fur is rubbed out and a bump or sore is raised.

It could be many things. It could be a bug bite, a bump from the dog hitting something, or something more serious. Take the dog to the vet right away.

It could be a tumor that you didn't notice earlier. If this is the case you should take the dog to the vet to make sure it's not cancerous. If the bump did really just appear suddenly your dog could have been stung by a bug and had an allergic reaction, or it could an abscess.

A bump that suddenly appears could be a tumor. Keep an eye on it. Perhaps it will go away. If it doesn't go away, please see a vet.
