Thyroid gland ,which regulates body metabolism ,is seen in this area. Factors like infection, nodules, goiter etc will cause enlargement of thyroid glands. Consult a doctor and he will suggest a Thyroid function test if necessary.

Thyroid gland is found in the neck just below the Adam's apple. A pea-sized lump might indicate a nodular cyst/nodular goiter or cancer. But the diagnosis will be supported after the person undergoes ancillary procedures like blood TSH, T3, and T4 analysis, ultrasound, radioiodine scanning and uptake MRI, and biopsy.

Do not worry. It is perfectly common according to many health sites. A lump that size appeals below the adam's apple may signal that you have an enlarged thyroid gland as compared to a normal one. However, that does not make you abnormal. And if you are worried, contact your doctor for more information.
