Most leaky faucets result from one of two things. Either the nuts and bolts holding the faucet pieces together have worked themselves loose or new gaskets are required. While sometimes they are caused due to a worn washer. It also depends on the faucets and how many small pieces are inside it.

Usually this is a sign of a worn valve in the tap. Replacing the valve is fairly simple with a screwdriver and wrench.

If this is a single handle tub faucet, it's more than likely debris and build up on the cartridge mechanism inside the valve body. If it's a three handle shower valve, the valve closing seals may need to be replaced.

There is a rubber O ring that is located on the reverse side of the faucet. If it was jostled loose during installation this could be the problem.

On an older faucet, it's most likely a worn O ring or washer. Newer faucets us a cartrige, which over time get clogged up with minerals and won't completely shut off. Sometimes this can be corrected without having to replace the cartrige. You can remove the cartrige and soak it overnight in CLR, but you should have a spare available.
