What could be wrong if my speedometer doesn't work?

It is more than likely a broken speedometer cable. They usually fail at the transmission or transfer case. If you do not have a cable, replace your speed sensor.

Speedometers are really simple - just a cable. That cable is probably broken. Depending on your car, you might be able to replace it yourself.

There could be an electrical fault if the speedometer is not working it is rarely a mechanical with this type of instrument.

It depends on the kind. If it is older, with a needle, then there is something wrong in the mechanism itself. If it's digital, then there's a computer.
