If the problem is that the picture fades and then comes back really bright, it's possible the TV has a bad filament. Check the filament near the CRT socket and if it's not lit, there is something wrong. Chances are, this doesn't apply if you don't have a CRT set.

It is likely caused by a loose/broken wire. Over time, the wires wear away, as well as collect dust, which may lower conductivity. In addition, a sudden impact (such as falling from a stand to the floor) may jerk the wire loose, causing erratic video failure and sometimes audio failure as well.

This is common on trinitron TVs. Usually a component on the main board has a bad solder joint. Generally an easy fix once you find where the bad joint is. HOWEVER, poking around inside a TV can be deadly if you don't know how to discharge it properly.

If it fails after prolonged number of minutes then it could be that a capacitor is warm and fails, but becomes usable again after its had enough time to cool.

The first thing you should check is all connections to the television. If those are good, it's possible it's a bad transformer, which can be costly.

Trinitron's use a CRT picture tube and it's possible that yours is going out. These types of sets often lose functionality as they age. While picture tubes can be replaced, it tends to be more expensive than buying a new television set altogether.
