First make sure there is enough gas getting to it. If you are getting enough gas to it the problem is likely with the automatic gas shut off. Most hot water heaters have a sensor that lets it know the pilot is lit so that if it goes out gas doesn't fill your house. It's probably bad.

Check the thermocoupler that cuts off gasflow when the pilot light goes out. A bad one can shut off the pilot light. Are the draft-blocking hoods and baffles in place?

The first thing you should check is whether or not you have any oil in the tank. If you do, the problem could be with the ignitor switch. A loss of power, or a power surge could cause the switch to burn out, neccesitating a replacement.

Its probably the pilot light. Let the room air out and try to light it with a candle lighter. If it wont stay lit, call the electric company and they'll see if your gas line is feeding enough gas.

If there's no disruption of the gas supply, it maybe a problem with your spill switch. Also you may need to replace either your thermocouple or gas valve. If none of these work, I'd recommend calling someone to come fix it, since any work further than this should be done by a professional.

Pilot light won't stay lit? Clean the ceramic filter: Use an inspection mirror and a flashlight to look for lint on the bottom of the burner/pilot light chamber under the water tank and clean it with a soft brush and vacuum. Turn gas off at the control to be safe.

Well if your hot water heater will not stay lit, then basically it means that your parts have been over worked. You need to replace the parts.

It sounds like you are having a problem with the gas. Make sure everything is clean and free of dust and lint.

Thermocouples wear out, so replace that first. Air in the gas line is another suspect, so bleed the gas line a bit by loosening the fitting. And check the settings to make sure your asking for hot water and that it wasn't turned off for the vacation.
