What could be the cause of tapping in my Harley Shovelhead engine?

The valves more than likely need adjusting. The procedure is not difficult with a few basic hand tools, along with a set of feeler gauges and the pushrod tube compression tool available from Harley-Davidson and several other aftermarket sources. The correct procedure is outlined in the factory Shovelhead service manual, which is well worth its purchase price.

The most common cause of tapping is a valve train that is not adjusted correctly. Another issue that can lead to tapping is low oil or low oil pressure.

These engine were know to have noisy lifters. Check them to see if they are loose or if some aren't pumping all the way up. Then set them to factory specifications and see if that helps.
