Ankle joint instability may be due to weakness of ligaments or any other supporting structures around the joint. Ligament laxity makes the joint prone to dislocations during sudden movements. When the joint is dislocated there may be some tear in the muscles or other soft tissues around the joint. This causes an inflammation and hence pain occurs.

Did you by chance fall or twist your ankle. Popping and ankle pain are symptoms of a sprained ankle. Do you have any swelling? Popping of the ankle, without pain is normal but with pain it usually has something to do with the tendons in the ankle.

It sounds you have messed up your ankle joint. I would see the doctor right away. Until then make sure to take some pain reliever and ice the area. But you will definitely need to go see the doctor as soon as possible. They will probably take some x-rays of your ankle.

It could very well be the starting of arthritis. I think if it just pops, it would not worry me as much as you having pain. Need to see a doctor because could be where they could give shots now and a pill to stop the tearing of your joint.

If you tore ligaments you need to go to an orthopedist and have them evaluate you, and possibly surgery or physical therapy.
