An engine requires three things to start: air, fuel, and spark. Spark is provided by the spark plugs, which get fouled and must be replaced regularly. In modern cars, air and fuel are typically regulated by electronic fuel injectors. Owners can typically check the air filter, and replace if necessary; fuel filters can also clog but are harder to replace.

When you turn the key if it makes rapid clicks then its most likely the battery, terminals or cables. A single click could be the starter.
