What could be causing pain when my toes are spreading?

When I spread my toes apart I get a great deal of pain in the sides of toes and my foot.

It's possible you damaged some nerves while walking/running etc. Perhaps your shoes are to tight and do not fit correctly. Diabetes can have a large impact on feet and toes as can gout. Damaged back or leg nerves can generate pain in the foot region. There are actually close to 400 causes of this type of pain.

There are many foot ailments that could be to blame. Depending on your age, it could be arthritis beginning to set in. If you are over 40 I would consider this, especially if it goes away intermittently.

Common reasons for pain are soft growths in the foot usually benign, tendons in the foot can over-stretch, and Morton's neuroma causes thickening in a large nerve in the foot and it takes up space in the foot causing pain when spreading the toes.

This could be two different things. One, it could be the ligaments streatching to a new position, if you don't do this often it will hurt at first. Two, you could have fascitis (inflammation of the facia (covering of the muscles)).
