What could be causing a strange sound to come out of the engine of my VW Bug?

This really depends on the type of sound that is coming out of the engine. If it sounds like a sputter then it could be caused by a leaking manifold. This would also result in a loss of power. If the sound is loud then it could be serious.

You might have thrown a piston, or it's possible you need to change your oil. This is a fairly broad question becomes there are many different models of your type of car. I would either consult a mechanic personally, or refer to your user manual.

It could be numerous reason that are causing this problem. It can be internal combustion engine belts, valves, exhaust pipe, if sounds like sputter noise then it could be the cause from a leaking manifold in which also results in lost of power. If sound is very loud it could result of any serious problem check with professional mechanic.

It could be a number of things, but most likely it is in the valve train resulting from a sticky lifter. The oil should be changed immediately and if the noise persists you need service.

The most likely culprit of "strange noises" coming from an internal combustion engine are belts. There are most likely 3-6 belts within your engine that transfer power from the engine to things like cooling fans and Air Conditioning. If these belts get lose they will squeal loudly - a sure sign it's time for belt maintenance.

Usually start by checking you accesorie belts for wear and tear. Could also be results of mis fires during combustion, or valvetrain could use adjustment. Worn out motor mounts could cause sounds as well.

When strange sounds come out of an engine it could be many things. Sometimes you can tell what kind of strange noise it is by listening. A light ticking noise means valves. The other things that could make noise is motor mounts need replaced. They are diffrent things if a grinding noise or a small tick,tick, noise.

Well there can be a lot of sounds that could be considered strange that may come from an engine. Some are normal and some indicate an internal problem. The best thing to do is consult a local mechanic.

Your engine sounds like it is having some kind of mechanical issues. I would check and see if something if getting stuck.
