What could be causing a septic smell from my air pipes?

It is very possible that you have a backed up septic tank, it would need flushed and evacuated. Then some cleaning of the air pipes would also be necessary to return it to normal.

I'm assuming by "air" pipes you mean plumbing vent pipes. These pipes are important for providing an outlet for plumbing smells so that they do not vent through your drains. The top of the vent pipes should be several feet above your roof and away from any habitable areas. If they are not you should extend them.
