One of the generalized responses of the immune system when confronted with a pathogen is to produce a fever. Many of the microbes which infect the body are susceptible to elevated temperatures. Allowing a low grade fever to run it's course is often helpful. Severe bacterial or viral infections often produce a high fever that lasts for several days.

Most high fevers are mainly to do with twenty four hour viruses. You have the fever for 24-48 hours then it is gone there is no flu or cold attached to it and you feel well again. Some fevers can mean more serious illnesses like meningitis cold or flu.

A high fever is a very uncommon and serious problem. A fever can mean you are a disease or sickness, you could have an internal infection too. A high fever should always be kept at bay so make sure to take medicate to keep it down and seek a doctor if a fever goes more than three days.
