Usually a red dacshund can have varying shades of dark brown through it's coat to a light honey. If the dog is truly red you will be able to see the red in it's coat in the sunlight. I have known people who have looked for the red variety and that is how they checked.

Usually it is a dark brown with a reddish tint, but sometimes you can get an almost black dog with the reddish tint too. There are lighter colors as well, like a "carrot" color.
