The most common cause could be water retention. The retention could be caused by a heart problem such as congestive heart failure.

Generalized swelling can be very serious and can be caused by such things as congestive heart failure, kidney, or liver disease, just to name a few. Generalized allergic reactions, severe sun exposure, and some skin disorders can be the cause. With any of these things, seeking medical intervention is advisable.

This is usually because your body is retaining water. If this is happening to you then you should look into whether or not you could have diabetes because people with that can often deal with sypmtoms such as water retention. Also it could be diet or some other condition that only a doctor can really diagnose in person.
