The most common cause of low levels of thyroid hormones in the blood is an autoimmune disease where the body produces antibodies that see the thyroid as foreign and attack it. Another common cause is a viral infection of the thyroid itself which is usually temporary and self resolving in nature.

Low thyroid hormone production can be caused by a number of different things. The most common cause world-wide is iodine deficiency, as iodine is required to make the hormone. There is also a postpartum hypothyroidism that is very common in women. There could also be a problem in the hypothalamus or pituitary glands which both release thyroid-controlling hormones.
