Well probably the three biggest contributor of power loss are wear, lack of maintenance, and damage. The older he engine gets the more the internal parts have moved and the more the surfaces that contact get worn. Not doing routine maintenance can make a engine run much less efficiently than normal costing power. Internal engine damage obviously would diminish performance.
