usually any scuff or scratch on the disk might disrupt the laser that reads the disk. The surface must be clean and smooth for best results. Sometimes a dvd drive can also get dusty inside and might need cleaning. There are cleaning disks that can be inserted to clean the laser.

A DVD movie can freeze and cause interruptions during playback if the DVD disk or player may be dirty causing the player to have difficulty reading the information. A damaged or scratched disk can also cause such interruptions.
