Several things can cause hyperthyroidism, depending on which kind an individual has. Some of these causes include: not enough dietary iodine, autoimmune disease and inflammation of the thyroid. It's also possible for a woman to get hyperthyroidism after they give birth. About 90% of those in the USA get hyperthyroidism through an autoimmune disease; 53% of Swiss through iodine deficiency.

It is cause by the abnormal secretion of Thyroid Stimulating Hormone or it may be caused by an excess presence of Iodine in the body which all results to the increase presence of thyroid hormone. More thyroid hormone means there is an increase stimulation for the thyroid glands to produce more hormones.
