Brain tumors have many causes - too many to list. However, it can often be metastasis from another tumor. If you dog has a cancerous tumor elsewhere in his body, the cells can break off anf flow through the blood to his brain, where they start to form another tumor. Many tumors are idiopathic, meaning nobody knows the cause.

Cancer is common in elderly dogs of all breeds, including labs. Less frequently, younger dogs can also get cancer. Cancer is considered to have a genetic component in dogs, so there may be a history of cancer in your dog's ancestry. Cancer is a complicated illness.

Brain tumors can be caused by many things. Often it is just genetics. If your dog has tumors elsewhere, they can metastasize and spread to other areas, including the brain.

Genetics is the most common case, and labs seem to get them frequently. Always check a breeds outline before making a decision since the AKC accepts anyone even puppy mills.
