Increased hormonal production of melatonin causes some women to develop a brown vertical line below the naval. This is a harmless condition and will gradually fade away after the birth of a baby. This is nothing to be concerned about and is a normal condition of pregnancy in many expectant mothers.

This is the line of pregnancy and is caused by the change in hormones, specifically the levels of progesterone in her body. For most and nearly all women this line will fade away after the pregnancy is over but will return and darken with any additional pregnancies and this line can also darken with hormone medications.
