Family Court handles legal matters that affect/pertain to families: adoption, separation/divorce, custody/child support, domestic abuse, paternity. Matters involving previous cases on these issues are heard in Family Court as well.

Circuit courts are normally divided into three divisions, criminal, civil, and family. If your case is involving money damages, you would want to take it to the civil division of the court. However, if it has anything to do with custody or domestic related issues, the family division would handle your case.

Family circuit courts handle divorces if there isn't a divorce court in the jurisdiction, child custody cases, family visitation, paternity disputes, foster care placements, adoptions, and conservatorship of disabled adults and the elderly.

Family Court is different than Circuit Court. Family Court hears matter concerning family issues: divorce, martial maintenance, separation, child custody/support, adoption, domestic abuse, paternity and the like. If you have an issue with your ex-husband over a matter related to divorce/kids/child support, you would return to Family Court. Other matters would be heard in a civil court, including Small Claims actions.
