Question by  GreyDwarf (26)

What can you use as a laundry detergent substitute?

I am already running out when I need it most, is there anything I can use that will hold me over until I can get to the store?

A good substitute for laundry detergent is regular old baking soda. It can be applied directly to stains with a bit of water as a paste, then you can use the powder directly in the wash as you would regular powder detergent. A little white vinegar is also good to add to your whites, it will make them brighter.

White distilled vinegar cleans laundry very well and so does baking soda. You can use dish detergent but don't use too much or it will over suds.

You can use dish detergent to wash clothing in a pinch. Dawn is a great substitute because it helps get grease stains lifted off your clothes. Shampoo will also work as a last resort.

You can either use dish washing liquid, such as Dawn, Palmolive, etc. Or you can use soap shavings put into a cup of water and allowed to soften, preferable over night. You will have to do two rinses if you use the soap flakes though.
