Sometimes when wisdom teeth erupt into the mouth, they have a little flap of gum over them called an operculum. It can act like a pocket trapping food and plaque and causing inflamation of the gum around the tooth. Irrigation involves using a saline filled syringe to deliver a thin little jet of water to flush out the pocket.

Usually your doctor will give you an irrigation tool. You need to squirt water into the hole to get any "debris" out of the hole.

Your dentist can provide you with a syringe for dental irrigation. You should be very careful to follow all your dentist's instructions--don't use too much pressure.

Rinse the area with a mix of a cup of warm water with a teaspoon of salt after meals. You can also substitute the salt for peroxide if bleeding persists.

After your wisdom teeth are removed, the dentist will give you a syringe that you can fill with water. After you eat, you will need to use this syringe to spray into the hole where the wisdom teeth used to be. Usually just a couple of squirts will get out any food that may be stuck in there.
