Did you get any new appliances or have the temperature controlled more than usual? If not, how many therms did you use? If it doesn't add up call the company.

Your electric bill likely comprises three metrics - service charge (a monthly fee for receiving the service), kWh used and cost per KwH. Compare these metrics to your prior bills - if the first or third rose, there's generally no remedy. If kWh rose dramatically, the meterman may have misread your meter - check with the company for more information.

The power company is the best source of information with regard to your bill and whether it is due to usage or rate increases. Keep in mind that the cost of utilities has increased across the county, in come cases as much as 50% due to the economy and the rising cost of everything.

Compare your latest bill to prior bills. The rate per KWH may have increased. You may have new electrical devices you use. You may have left something on too long.

There are a couple things to consider here. First, are you using more electricity than you used to? If you are then you need to address why. If it is just the rates then you should consider cutting back.

Everything has increased in cost and the interrelationships between rising costs of business suppliers, producers and consumers is affected by the inflation of costs required to deliver same value while still allowing corporations and affiliations to benefit of ever increasing profits.
