When a court awards "temporary custody," the terms are specified at the time. The period of temporary custody is usually set to afford a parent time to accomplish a requirement of the court (find housing, get out of rehab or jail, etc. )

The court can grant temporary custody for any number of reasons, so the court documents would be the best source of answers to questions as to why it was granted. The documents would also detail the parties involved, the term of the temp custody and the time at which it would be re-reviewed.

A judge can grant temporary custody rights to a person (mainly another relative or parent) if there's sufficient evidence that a child is in eminent danger. Temporary custody rights is usually done by lawyers. After child protective services investigate, there is another court hearing to determine if permanent custody of the child should be considered.

The Court assigns temporary custody rights to an individual while it decides what party shall have long-term custody. Temporary custody might be assigned to grandparents, adult siblings or foster parents.

I think it is a good thing. You can be with you son or whatever for a bit of time.
